                                                         New Year Festival....

 The Sinhala Hindu New Year is one of the main festivals celebrated by the people of Sri Lanka. The new year festival generally falls on the 13th or 14th of April. It is a national festival. The Sinhalese and the Hindus celebrate the new year in a grand scale.


The people get ready for the new year in advance. They wash their houses. Some people even  colour- wash their houses. They buy or sew new clothes for the new year. They make sweetmeats like kavum, kokis, munkarali, athirasa, asmi, and etc. They visit their relations and friends. They exchange gifts. They worship their elders. The elders and children alike enjoy the new year. The children are happier. They receive new dresses, tasty food and gifts. They play folk games. The new year has special customs. On the new year day, they light the hearth  at an auspicious time. There is a period called non- auspicious time. During that time they go to temple and engage in meritorious activities. New year time is a happy time for everyone. It seems even the environment is happy. The environment becomes beautiful. The trees are full of flowers and fruits. The birds sing happily. The new year make friendships and relationships strong....😍😍
